Künzelsau Mountain Railway Festival – 25 Years of Cable Car Mobility

The 25th anniversary of the mountain railroad was celebrated in Künzelsau at the weekend. Numerous guests came together at the Künzelsau cable car festival to experience history, technology and community. This event impressively illustrated the importance of Germany’s first urban cable car.

Since 1999, the railway has connected the city center in the valley with the higher-lying Taläcker district, which is approximately 170 meters above the city center. The railway has long been considered a model of innovative inner-city mobility.

Over 30,000 journeys are made annually, carrying approximately 700,000 passengers. In this way, the cable car replaces tens of thousands of bus journeys – fully automated and driverless, as the system has been operating entirely unmanned since its inception.

A celebration of history and technology

The anniversary offered many insights: historical insights, conversations with visitors, and interesting insights from the practical side of things. Participants not only wanted to see the railway in operation, but also learned about the inspections and maintenance procedures that are crucial for safety.

The tours given by operations manager Günter Kantenwein were particularly popular. He explained how the ropes are constructed and why regular inspections are essential.

ROPESYS technology for lasting safety

The safety of the system has been guaranteed for many years by magneto-inductive testing. With the ROPESYS rope testing devices, even the smallest internal changes in the rope can be detected before damage occurs.

In addition, the cable car uses a permanent rope oiler that continuously provides lubrication and thus extends the service life of the ropes.

Technology you can touch

The Künzelsau Mountain Railway Festival demonstrated the importance of exchange between experts, operators, and citizens. Visitors asked questions and received understandable answers on-site.

This made it clear how modern measurement technology and practical experience work together to ensure maximum safety.

Outlook for the future

The celebration in Künzelsau underlines the fact that urban cable cars are a central component of sustainable mobility. ROPESYS will continue to use state-of-the-art technology to help ensure that the cable car operates reliably and remains safe.

This benefits not only the operators, but above all all passengers who use this special form of transport every day.
