ROTEC on TV: Galileo reports on the annual inspection and magnetic rope testing with the ROPESYS rope testing device at the Nebelhornbahn.

Magnetic rope testing was the focus of an exciting TV segment on Galileo on Pro Sieben. On Friday, December 20, 2024, the show featured the work of our experts Sven Winter and Sebastian Traub. The camera team provided exclusive behind-the-scenes insights into the magnetic rope testing on the new two-rope circulating cable car “Nebelhornbahn” in Oberstdorf, Allgäu.

Fear of heights as a core competency.
The Nebelhornbahn is one of the most modern cable cars in Germany. In addition, it is 4.5 kilometers long and has only been in operation for three years. The camera team accompanied our experts through challenging tests at dizzying heights. In the process, the employees showed nerves of steel.

Magnetic rope testing in action.
Sebastian Traub explained the processes of magnetic rope testing. The test checked whether the ropes carrying the cabins were damaged or worn out. Both the support ropes and the traction ropes played a crucial role. The traction rope consists of approximately 300 wires, twisted in a double-helix pattern around a core.

Height control on the supports.
Sven Winter demonstrated the control of the supports over which the cabins travel. For this, he was equipped with a body cam, safety harness, and a service vehicle. He also inspected the ropes for wear. He also ensured that the lubricant film was fully intact to prevent any water from penetrating. The inspection of the supports was particularly impressive – without any guardrails and in freezing temperatures.

Exciting facts and impressive images.
The show not only explained the technology behind magnetic rope testing but also showcased the challenges of working at heights in spectacular images. The viewers also learned more about the technical terms. According to Sebastian Traub, “There are gondolas only in Venice.” That’s why they are correctly called cabins in the context of cable cars.
