In open-cast mining, the machinery and equipment used are subjected to enormous stresses. The huge excavators move gigantic masses of earth every day and must operate with absolute reliability. A key role is played by the hoist ropes that lift and move booms weighing tons.

To ensure long-term safety in this demanding environment, regular non-destructive testing is essential.

Demanding testing conditions in the energy sector

Our compact rope testing device is used worldwide in many areas of the energy sector. These include, for example:

  • Crane systems in power plants

  • Traction ropes of pressure pipe carriages in pumped storage power plants

  • Hoist ropes in shaft hoisting systems

  • Offshore crane ropes in the construction of wind farms

  • Crane ropes for mobile cranes for wind turbines

  • Hoist ropes on opencast mining excavators

This versatility makes our devices an important component for safety in a variety of applications.

Even in open-pit mining, conditions are often extreme: dust, dirt, lubricants, and enormous mechanical forces place extreme demands on the ropes and equipment used. Therefore, a precise condition assessment is crucial.

Rope testing on the world’s largest excavators

This is particularly evident at the Hambach open-cast mine in the Rhineland. For example, the 293 excavator is in operation there – a giant weighing over 14,000 tons and standing 96 meters tall. It can move up to 240,000 m³ of material daily. Its 75 mm diameter hoist ropes lift the enormous bucket wheel boom, subjecting it to enormous loads.

Precise, non-destructive testing is essential to ensure the safety of people and machines.

Reliable results even under difficult conditions

Our rope testing device It impresses not only with its compact design, but also with its robust construction. Thanks to the high-resolution sensor head with 50 channels, the rope is analyzed in great detail. Wireless data transmission also ensures easy handling – even in confined spaces and under difficult weather conditions.

In this way, we are making an important contribution to safety and efficiency in open-cast mining – and ensuring that these impressive machines can continue to operate reliably and safely.
