How can the condition of a wire rope be assessed as comprehensively as possible? Modern testing technology increasingly relies on a combination of magnetic and optical rope inspection for this purpose.
While magnetic testing reliably detects internal damage and cross-sectional loss, optical rope inspection provides additional information about the rope’s external condition. Our new film shows how both methods work together in practice.
Effective combination of magnetic and optical rope inspection
Magnetic rope testing has long been an established method for assessing the condition of wire ropes. It enables the reliable detection of internal wire breaks and cross-sectional area losses.
However, the external condition of the rope is also of great importance for the most comprehensive assessment possible. In many cases, this is still carried out manually.
This is precisely where visual rope inspection complements the proven method. The ROPESYS FALCON F58 camera system continuously captures the rope surface along its entire length.
Four high-resolution cameras document the slightest changes and provide additional image information for subsequent analysis.
Insight into practical application
The accompanying promotional video shows the complete procedure for a combined rope inspection on a cable car system. It demonstrates the setup of the ROPESYS R58 magnetic rope inspection device and the installation of the ROPESYS FALCON F58 optical camera system.
Subsequently, the recordings accompany the inspection process during ongoing cable operations.
The film also shows various perspectives of the wire rope, the installation of the systems, and the analysis of the recorded data on the monitor. This illustrates how both methods operate in parallel and meaningfully complement each other.
More information for a well-founded condition assessment
Visual rope inspection does not replace magnetic rope inspection. Rather, it supplements it with important visual information regarding the condition of the rope surface. This makes it possible to document anomalies, track changes, and evaluate the results in conjunction with the magnetic measurement data.
The combination of magnetic and optical rope inspection thus creates a sound basis for assessing the condition of safety-critical wire ropes.
