Rope testing equipment for record-breaking installations in practical use.
Rope-testing equipment for record-breaking installations must perform where others struggle: at the largest, highest, and deepest facilities on Earth.
There, steel wire ropes keep operations running, and their condition should not be left to chance.
This is why ROPESYS rope testing devices are used all over the world. Depending on the rope diameter and the specific application, the appropriate device is deployed—operated by the ROTEC testing team.
Records in Cable Car Technology and Mining
Records can be found across a wide variety of industries. In La Paz, the world’s largest urban cable car network spans the city. The Teleférico de Mérida in Venezuela ascends to an altitude of 4,765 meters, while in South Africa, mine hoisting systems operate at extreme depths.
Vietnam also has plenty to offer. At Fansipan, a 3S cable car overcomes one of the largest vertical drops in the world, while other record-breaking cable car systems can be found in Ha Long Bay and on Phu Quoc.
In Ba Na Hills, ROTEC inspected approximately 60 kilometers of cable across a total of nine cable car systems. At Ba Den Mountain, the inspectors also worked on several extraordinary installations.
From the Zugspitze to the Caucasus
The operational reach extends from the Alps to Armenia. This includes the Wings of Tatev as well as the cable car technology on the Zugspitze.
Turkey is also home to a record-holder: the Bursa Teleferik. Built by LEITNER, the line spans nearly nine kilometers, making it the longest single-cable gondola lift in the world.
Dr. Martin Wehr trained the staff there on how to use the ROPESYS R58 rope testing device and demonstrated how magnetic rope testing works in practice.
From passenger transport to the heaviest work machine
Superlatives aren’t limited to cable cars. At the Hambach open-pit mine, the Bagger 293—the world’s largest and heaviest land vehicle—is in operation. Its four hoisting ropes each have a diameter of 75 millimeters.
The ROTEC team tested them directly on the machine using magnetic-inductive inspection with the ROPESYS R83.
Regardless of how varied the operating environments may be, the challenge remains the same: wire ropes perform critical functions and are often subjected to high levels of stress. Consequently, a reliable method for monitoring their condition is essential.
Rope inspection equipment for record-breaking installations: a look inside the rope
A purely visual inspection is not always sufficient for large wire ropes. Some types of damage occur inside the rope without being clearly visible from the outside. Magnetic rope testing therefore complements visual inspection by providing measurement data on changes within the wire rope.
This allows for a wide variety of applications to be covered, ranging from cable cars high above the city to massive pieces of machinery used in open-pit mining.
The installations could hardly be more different. The task remains the same: to reliably assess the condition of the wire ropes.
