Rope inspection in Vietnam – ROTEC and ROPESYS between world records and tropical heat.

Three weeks, six spectacular cable car installations, and countless meters of altitude: Our colleague Lars was traveling in Vietnam for ROTEC – with the ROPESYS R28 rope inspection system. The goal was a comprehensive rope inspection in Vietnam, from north to south, under challenging climatic conditions and on record-breaking installations.

World record on Fansipan

In northern Vietnam, near Sa Pa, is Fansipan, the highest mountain in Indochina at 3,143 meters. Three cable cars lead to the summit, including the famous 3S cable car, which holds the Guinness World Record for the greatest vertical drop at 1,410 meters. Until the opening of the Hon Thom cable car, it was also considered the longest 3S cable car in the world, with a length of 6,292 meters. Here, too, the ROPESYS R28 was successfully tested – under special conditions that also required a great deal of experience.

Largest gondola and world’s tallest support tower in Ha Long Bay

Next, the team boarded the Queen Cable Car in the famous Ha Long Bay. With room for 230 people, it holds the world record for the largest cable car cabin in the world. Until the Cat Ba cable car was put into operation, it also held the record for the highest cable car tower (188.88 meters). The region around Ha Long Bay is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site – and presented the team with logistical challenges that could only be overcome jointly.

Tallest cable car tower in the world

The Cat Ba Cable Car, right next door, boasts an impressive 214.8-meter-high pylon—according to the Guinness Book of Records, the world’s tallest cable car pylon. It connects the mainland with Cat Ba Island and is also part of the SUN GROUP.

Central Vietnam: 60km of rope and French charm

In central Vietnam, the Bana Hills resort awaited, a mix of French village and amusement park at an altitude of 1,487 meters. There are nine cable cars there—one of which, at 5,801 meters, is the longest non-stop monocable car in the world. ROTEC also tested a total of around 60km of rope with the ROPESYS R28, which required a lot of coordination and also presented a particular challenge for the team.

Largest cable car station in the world

Four cable cars were inspected on Ba Den Mountain near Tay Ninh. This is home to the world’s largest cable car station, covering 10,959 square meters. Here, too, our system was deployed under challenging conditions – both technically and organizationally.

Above the sea: 48km of rope at the Hon Thom cable car

The last stop was the Hon Thom Cable Car on the island of Phu Quoc. At 7,899.9 m, it is the longest non-stop tricable gondola in the world. A total of almost 48 km of cable runs across the open sea – an impressive challenge for any cable inspection. Here, too, the ROPESYS R28 was used and impressed with its reliability.

Rope inspection in Vietnam in darkness and fog

The conditions were extremely diverse: fog, heat, tight stations, and nighttime inspections. Since tourists were out and about during the day, many rope inspections took place at night – with headlamps, laptops, and a great deal of sensitivity. A total of around 200km of rope were inspected – another international deployment for the ROPESYS R28, which has proven itself again.

Thank you, Vietnam!

From the foggy soup of Fansipan to the tropical heat of Phu Quoc – the trip through Vietnam was not only technically challenging, but also a true experience in terms of landscape and culture. ROTEC and ROPESYS thank the local SUN GROUP teams for the excellent cooperation and look forward to the next time.
