ROPESYS Splice Finder – Device for rope monitoring

A challenge on the Wankbahn.

A proven system, a familiar installation, and yet a new challenge: the second splice finder on the Wankbahn demonstrated that even successful projects can entail unique requirements.

Following the successful installation and commissioning of an identical system the previous year, the new project began with a wealth of experience and positive expectations. The technical requirements were well understood, and previous results had demonstrated the system’s reliable operation.

During commissioning, however, it became apparent that practical application sometimes requires additional analyses.

Technical anomalies during commissioning

During test operations, isolated alerts occurred that required closer examination. The cause could not be immediately determined, as the initial measurements did not yet provide a clear explanation.

At the same time, the start of the season was imminent. It was therefore important for the operator of the Wankbahn that the facility be ready for operation again in time.

This marked the beginning of an intensive analysis conducted directly on the cable car system. After all, particularly when it comes to splice detection, it is crucial to reliably classify anomalies and understand their actual causes.

Multiple measurements provide clarity.

Additional measuring instruments, spare parts, and other materials were prepared for the further investigations.

Sebastian and Benni set off for Garmisch-Partenkirchen to analyze the situation together with the local officials.

The initial results provided important clues; however, it quickly became clear that a single investigation would not be sufficient.

Consequently, further site visits took place. Sebastian carried out additional measurements and, together with the parties involved, examined the interaction between the various technical components.

With each subsequent analysis, the possible causes could be narrowed down more precisely. This gradually created an increasingly clear picture of the situation.

Additional data via Timeswipe

ROTEC’s proprietary measurement system, Timeswipe—originally developed by Hamburg-based Panda and later fully acquired by ROTEC—provided important support during the investigation.

The additional measurement data allowed the anomalies to be evaluated in greater detail. Based on this, the experts added further electronic components and improved the shielding of specific areas.

Subsequent tests confirmed that the adjustments made achieved the desired effect.

Successful start to the season despite challenges

In the end, the Wankbahn was able to start the summer season as planned.

For the passengers, the intensive technical work remained in the background. For all those involved, however, the project demonstrated the importance of systematic analysis and reliable measurement data in demanding applications.

Splice detection involves more than just the technology employed. Equally crucial are experience, thorough analysis, and a willingness to work with the customer to investigate the root cause until a sustainable solution is found.

It was precisely this combination that was the deciding factor for the Wankbahn as well.
